Stiletto Race

Never, ever, settle for the minimum” – Bave dela Cruz

“Many aspires, only few would dare”

Its Marikina City’s shoe festival once again and how time flies fast. It has been a year already since I joined the pilot race of Tour de Takong last November 18, 2011. It was a bitter-sweet but more bitter moment at that time. That up until now, whenever I see the 500 meter Shoe Avenue I feel angry of what transpired in the event. Call me a sore loser…but you can’t take that away from me. And if you were in my position you might see yourself pounding your stiletto on the judge’s crown.

FLASHBACK

<3<3<3 all for the love of running

It was a rain-showery morning of November18, 2011. I AM EXCITED! Excited to ramp my DIY tutu skirt, and my sexy red stilettos which may only be 3 inches and enters the minimum, only because I don’t want to take the risk of having an injury. To cut the story short, the race was delayed because it was covered LIVE on National TV by a morning show Umagang Kay Ganda. A false gunstart injured many participants especially the “mamaws”. After a few more minutes of recovery the gun was shot by Bb. Pilipinas Universe 2010 Venus Raj. With approximately 3-4 minutes I crossed the finishline in 4th position. With the second placer being disqualified for age criteria (18 years old and above and she’s 16) I moved up to 3rd place. The judges measured the stiletto heels of my sandals and it was short by .01mm, therefore I was announced disqualified too for the title. C’mon!

the so called measurement of the “judges”…SHORT by .01 mm using a white plastic ruler for preschoolers with faded prints

I know…I know its way TOO late to rant about this. In fact, I held my so called letter of petition, I wrote that very same day. I just thought, WHY BOTHER? The prizes were awarded already on the spot. For the benefit of not making a scene I swallowed my pride and went home sourgraping of the what-would-have-beens.

Now that they will do it again for the second time, I still feel excited, not as excited as last year though but I so looking forward to this. It’s just because of the fact that I can run on stilettos. The chance that most women would want to join into but won’t dare do it (just like doing barefoot or ultramarathons). I just hope that this year would be more fun and standards are more acceptable.

Stiletto of any kind and design can be used as long as the heel is at least 3 inches high and has a tip diameter of not more than 1.5 centimeters.

The stilettos must not be taped on the contestant’s feet. The age of the contestants, height of the heels, and the diameter of the heel’s tip will be checked to see if these requirements conform to the race rules before the winners are declared.

“The stiletto race would not only measure the strength and tolerance of the participants enduring the discomfort while racing to the finish line, but the beauty and durability of the shoes as well. This is why we encourage all our participants to wear Marikina-made shoes during the competition, because they are highly durable and comfortable to wear,” De Guzman said.

Check-in time for the participants is 5:30 a.m. while the race proper starts at 7:00 a.m. Male and female participants are set to run separately.

Contestants are encouraged to wear fabulous, sexy or unique attires as special awards will be given like the Shoe-perstar Award, Shoes-yal Award, Shoe-nique Award, Shoe Sexy for this Race! Award, and the Miss Shoe-niverse Award.
